The Board of Education of School District 69, Skokie/Morton Grove, has appointed Dr. Mark Chao as its new member to fill the vacancy from the resignation of Dr. James Sands. Dr. Chao’s term will end in April, 2011. Dr. Chao was sworn in at a regular meeting held on October 20, 2009. Dr. Chao has been a resident of Skokie for forty-one years and attended District 69 and Niles West High School. His wife, Jasmine is a family physician, and they have two children. Dr. Chao served on the District 69 Board from 1998-2007 and is a patent attorney. He holds a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana and a J.D. from John Marshall Law School.
Dr. Chao considers the biggest challenge facing public education today is managing school quality while controlling school costs. 6th Grade & Cultural Symbols
6th Grade students were introduced to cultural symbols from the Aboriginal, African, and Native American Tribes.
Students individually selected numerous symbols from each culture that they felt were the strongest and most interesting.
They then began the tedious task of selecting ‘bits and pieces’ of each symbol, combining and manipulating
them so that they ultimately created their own original symbol.
Students began the final steps by sanding their wood in preparation for woodburning.
They burned their original symbol into the wood, and created a wrap-around border
utilizing parts from the original base symbols. Students then used acrylic paint to finish it off in a splash of color!
8th grade students were introduced to photography, then asked to review National Geographic Magazine.
Students searched for an image they felt was artistically strong, and were drawn to on a personal level.
From architecture to foreign lands and animal species, students pulled specific shapes
from their photograph. They manipulated and abstracted the shapes to create their final composition.
Working with specific color schemes, students then used acrylic paint to create beautifully finished work!
