Human Body Webquest

Introduction

The Human Body is a wonderful, complicated machine whose parts all work together to keep the body healthy. You are going to learn how the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems all work together in your body to give it the fuel and energy you need.

Task

You are going to travel through the human body on one of three different trains: The Circulatory Train, The Respiratory Train, or The Digestive Train. When you go on a journey, you must plan your departure, your activities during your trip, and your return home. You take pictures along the way and bring them back to show your family and friends.

Process

Choose one of the following train schedules...

The Circulatory Train

You will follow the path of a blood cell throughout the body, beginning with the heart and finally returning to the heart. List all the places through which the blood travels. Draw a picture of your journey.

The Respiratory Train

You will follow the path of a breath of air from the time it is inhaled until it is exhaled. List all the places through which the air travels. Draw a picture of your journey.

The Digestive Train

You will follow the path of a bite of pizza from the time you put it in your mouth until it leaves your body. List all the places through which the food travels. Draw a picture of your journey.

Evaluation

You will be assessed on the accuracy of your drawing for the body system you chose.

Your drawing can be computer-generated or drawn by hand.

Conclusion

You have now learned about the transport systems of the human body. You have listed and drawn the places through which food, air, and blood travel. Now that you know about these three systems you understand how important they are to your survival. You can use this knowledge to make good choices about the food you eat, the air you breathe and the substances that can get into your blood.

Economics Webquest

Introduction

Welcome to the wild world of Econ-o-mania! Econ-o-mania is where you will wander through wants and needs, grasp goods and services, create consumers and producers, and recognize resources. As you go through these activities you will become an expert on our Economy.

Task

You will learn about economics by visiting the places in Econ-o-mania.

Process

Day 1: Wandering Through Wants and Needs

Yippee!  You have just arrived at the Mall of Econ-o-mania.  At this mall you can find anything your heart desires.  Before you go in, you need to understand Wants and Needs. Needs are things people must have in order to live.  For example,  food and water are things I need to survive. Wants are things people would like to have.  For example, I would like to have a swimming pool in my backyard.

  • Before you leave on your journey, print the Wants and Needs worksheet to record your purchases. We will give you $300. $200 must be spent on things you Need.  Only $100 can be spent on Wants.  Please use your money wisely.
  • Enjoy your day at the Mall of Econ-o-mania.

Day 2: Goods and Services

I'm happy to say you've arrived at the Goods and Services Station.  Before you leave you need to know the following.  A Good is something people want that you can hold or touch.  Some examples are an apple, a rug, or a hairbrush.  A Service is something people do for other people.  Some examples are; a barber cuts hair, teachers educate students, or police officers protect people.

Before you start...
  • Brainstorm all the services that third graders can actually perform (example: weed pulling).
  • From this list, choose a  service that you would like to perform.
  • Now, using the Goods and Services Worksheet, list all the goods that you need in order to complete that job successfully.

Day 3: Learning about Producers and Consumers

Welcome to the Lemonade Stand. At the Lemondae Stand, we have Consumers and Producers.  You are going to be the Producer of lemonade.  A Producer is someone who makes a good or provides a service for another person (go to the glossary for definitions).  A Consumer is a person who uses the goods and services to satisfy their wants and needs.
You are the owner of a Lemonade Stand.   At your store, you have the option of advertising to try to attract more consumers.  You will also have to decide how much you should sell each glass of lemonade for. Some key terms to understand are Profit and Loss. Profit is money that you gain by selling a good or a service.  If you spend more than you make, you will have suffered a loss. Good Luck!

Lemonade Stand

Day 4: Rockin Resources Restaurant

Welcome to the Rockin' Resources Restaurant.  I sure hope you are hungry!  Today you will be visiting The Crab House Restaurant to check out some of their shrimp, fish and chef's specials.  Before you go, there are three things you should understand: human resources, capital resources and natural resources.
Human Resources are the people who use their health, strength, education, and skills to produce a good or service.  Some examples are: actors, students, teachers, doctors, lawyers, or tollbooth attendant.
Natural Resources are gifts from nature.   Examples are: land, trees, minerals, light from the sun, water, or eggs from a chicken.  IF SOMETHING IS MADE WITH THE HELP OF A MACHINE, IT IS NOT A NATURAL RESOURCE.
Capital Resources are the goods such as the building, equipment, machinery, ports, roads, dams, and other manufactured and constructed things used over and over again in the production of goods and services.  Examples are: trucks, factory, machinery, or forklift.

Need Some Help Print the Restaurant Worksheet

Evaluation

You will be graded on your participation and how well you use these resources to learn about Economics.
