SuccessMaker by Pearson
This year we are using a new reading intervention for the students demonstrating a need for reading comprehension support. SuccessMaker by Pearson is a web based program that places students at an appropriate level. Students then read passages and answer questions, practice fluency, complete word work (meaning, synonyms, antonyms, etc.) and then move through levels. Students should spend 20 minutes at leaset three times each week to get the full benefit of the intervention. That would be an average of 60 minutes each week. As we settle in during the 2nd quarter, we will begin rotating between literacy centers (The Daily Three) and SuccessMaker. Students will have to find 20 minutes outside of school to work on SuccessMaker. This can happen at home (if you have a computer and the internet), at the Skokie Public Library, at the Lincoln LMC, or make an appointment to stay with me after school.
Welcome to
Reading Intervention Class
Reading intervention class is a place for struggling readers to get some extra instruction and support to help improve their reading skills. Placement in this class was determined by using Spring 2012 data (AIMSweb Benchmarking, NWEA MAP, ISAT, etc.). Students with at least 2 data points below the 15% were placed in this class. This is a flexible class...as students reading skills improve and the need for extra support diminishes, students will be placed in an exploratory class.

Reading Interventions
Reading interventions is a place where struggling readers can get extra instruction and support. Students were chosen based on Spring 2012 AIMSweb Benchmarking scores, NWEA MAP scores, and other data. A student with 2 data points indicating reading support would be placed in a reading intervention class. We have a limited number of staff able to provide this support, however, this is a flexible class. That means that as the need for support diminishes, students may be transfered back into an exploratory class instead.

Students receiving reading fluency practice, have the opportunity to practice at home as well. Using their school login and passwords, students can use Read Live. Read Live is a web based version of the Read Naturally program.
AMP CLASS UPDATE
SitSitting on regular old desk chairs was getting to be really uncomfortable for some of the students. Many of them liked to bounce and move around. So I spent a lot of time researching the concept of using exercise/fitness balls as chairs. When I found the research to support it, I began looking through cataloges to see what was available. Thanks to the PTO we have a dozen in the reading classroom. Thre are 3 different sizes - 55cm, 65cm & 85cm. Most students like that they can bounce gently while listening, reading, or writing. Whenever teachers or students drop in, they always take time to check out thewhat it feels like to sit on exercise/fitness balls as chairs.

Welcome to Reading!!!
Students who have been identified through data may be scheduled for a reading intervention class. This class will take the place of an exploratory class. As of the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year, data from last spring was used spring's data for placement this year. This class may be for a short period of time or a longer period of time depending on the student's need. At the end of each quarter, data will be reviewed and continued placement in the reading intervention class will be discussed with grade level teachers.
Reading Class meets daily for 40 minutes. This year our classes will focus on reading comprehension using the SuccessMaker (see below). Generally, students are placed in a reading intervention class with grade level peers.
