Typing skills

I love seeing the progress with students using computers.  It is recommended that students practice typing at home, if possible.  Here are some great websites for learning the keyboard:

Holiday Meal

Yesterday, we hosted a Holiday Meal planned for and cooked by our students.  Over 30 guests came, and we enjoyed lasagna, garlic bread, two types of salads and cookies.  Students shared in conversation, practiced table manners and also helped serve the meal and drinks.  We talked about how the topics we discussed with our guests would be great for using with their own families over the holidays.

I would encourage you to have your child involved in helping with holiday and meal preparations as well as encourage them to participate in conversation.  A good goal, would be two ask 3 questions per meal with at least 1 follow-up question.  Each child is different with different goals, but here are some topic starters you could practice with your child:

  • How does your family celebrate the holidays/how did you celebrate when you were my age?
  • What is your favorite food to cook or eat at the holidays?
  • Do you enioy winter weather?
  • Have you ever traveled to see family? Where have you gone?
  • Do you like cooking?
  • Some things I have cooked in my classroom at school are... (waffles, oatmeal, eggs, sandwiches, lasagna, spaghetti, etc.)

I hope you have fun this winter break!  Mrs. Polgar

Today's cooking project

Yum!  With just three ingredients, and the use of a stovetop, this is an easy lunch or dinner we can all make independently!

Community Based Trip

Hello Parents,

On Thursday, we will be taking the Pace Bus to Niles West to see a production. We will be working on independent skills in order to utilize public transportation as well as proper behavior within a performance.

As a follow-up to this trip, and our recent trip to downtown Skokie, I encourage you to prompt your child to speak to employees in the community.  Please reinforce appropriate tone and volume of voice.  A great strategy is to practice and even write down what will be said, so your child can feel confident speaking up for themselves.

In addition, we have been doing a quarter and a half of cooking projects focusing on building independent skills.  So far, your child has learned to make a variety of breakfast and lunch items utilziing the microwave and sometimes the stovetop.  We will be sending home a list of recipes soon, but in the meantime, let's get cooking!  Encourage your child to toast their own bagels/bread and to spread on toppings independently.  Give them sandwich ingredients and supervise as they make their own sandwiches.  Help boil a pot of water to make boxes macaroni and cheese!

I hope your child is bringing some of the life skills learned in class home and if these are tasks they were previously doing independently, I hope they have even more confidence.

Thanks for your support!

Mrs. Kate Polgar

Pancakes!!!!  You asked for it, class!  We will learn how to make pancakes the easy way and then you can show your family how easy it can be.

Don't forget to share with your parents how you to make scrambled eggs in a mug!

1 egg
1 tsp. milk
Pinch of cheese

Spray the inside of a mug with nonstick spray.  Beat ingredients with a fork.  Microwave for 45-60 seconds and fluff with a fork.  Presto!  Scrambled eggs!  Tastes delish with added ingredients, too.  Some student suggestions were to add peppers or ham.
