Room 8 gets a visit from Ms. Davis.
On Monday, Ms. Davis read Room 8 a book about bullying and talked with students about how words can hurt just as much (if not more) than unsafe bodies. Students colored pictures of themselves and thought of ways that they can STOMP OUT BULLYING at Madison School. On February 27th, students and teachers will wear pink to support STOMP OUT BULLYING day!
Today, the Madison Super Hawks were delighted to welcome students from Lincoln Junior High as they perfomed a shortened version of Gooney Bird Greene. The students in Room 8 were thrilled by the performance and wanted to thank the cast and tell them what a great job they did. Room 8's students wrote properly punctuated friendly letters (one of the Second Grade Common Core English Language Arts Standards) to our fantastic guest performers We'll finish the letters up tomorrow (and add a little glitter for sparkle) before sending them off to LJH!
One of the 6 Traits of Good Writing is Organization! It’s so important to be able to organize your thoughts and stories so they make sense to your reader. To help us practice, Room 8 read Scaredy Squirrel, a book that shows many different ways to organize thoughts. In this very funny book, Scaredy Squirrel uses lists, schedules, and plans to help organize his day, escape danger, and make decisions. After reading the book, tables worked together on a project to practice this very savvy squirrel’s methods.
Today, the students of Room 8 brainstormed names and voted for their favorites to name our 3 Yellow Poison Dart Frogs (phyllobates terribilis). Please welcome Jay, Bob, and Green Ninja to the Madison School family. They were graciously donated to Room 8 by Miss Miller's brother who raises all sorts of frogs, lizards and bulldogs. Although the name "Yellow Poison Dart Frogs" sounds dangerous, these frogs aren't! To be able to make the "poison" they're named for, they have to eat ant from South America. Our frogs were raised in captivity in the United States and eat only crickets and mealworms. They're perfectly safe! Students in Room 8 have had a great time this week observing our new pets and are so excited to help take care of them this school year!

I have a B.A. in Biology from Lawrence University and am working on an MAT at National Louis University in Elementary Education. My philosophy of education is that children learn best when exposed to a variety of activities and experiences in a safe, positive environment. I believe that all children can learn and need to be in their least restrictive environment. I absolutely love being your child's teacher and would love to talk with you about your child at any time!
