Welcome to Reading!!!

Students who have been identified through data may be scheduled for a reading intervention class. This class will take the place of an exploratory class. As of the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year, data from last spring was used spring's data for placement this year. This class may be for a short period of time or a longer period of time depending on the student's need. At the end of each quarter, data will be reviewed and continued placement in the reading intervention class will be discussed with grade level teachers.

Reading Class meets daily for 40 minutes. This year our classes will focus on reading comprehension using the SuccessMaker (see below). Generally, students are placed in a reading intervention class with grade level peers.

SuccessMaker by Pearson                 

This year we are using a new reading intervention for the students demonstrating a need for reading comprehension support. SuccessMaker by Pearson is a web based program that places students at an appropriate level. Students then read passages and answer questions, practice fluency, complete word work (meaning, synonyms, antonyms, etc.) and then move through levels. Students should spend 20 minutes at leaset three times each week to get the full benefit of the intervention. That would be an average of 60 minutes each week. As we settle in during the 2nd quarter, we will begin rotating between literacy centers (The Daily Three) and SuccessMaker. Students will have to find 20 minutes outside of school to work on SuccessMaker. This can happen at home (if you have a computer and the internet), at the Skokie Public Library, at the Lincoln LMC, or make an appointment to stay with me after school.
