Potty Training
- Observing other children going to the bathroom appropriately – Some families are comfortable with this idea. Other families are not. The idea is that your child is observing what he is supposed to do in the bathroom.
- Dry pant checks every 20-30 minutes for 3 days. Record when your child is dry. You will see patterns in what times of day the child is wet. This process will show you times for your child to practice going to the bathroom.
- Divide # of waking minutes/#times he goes a day= Frequency the child uses the bathroom
- If he averages going to the bathroom 1x/hr., he should be taken to the bathroom every 30 minutes
- Before you take him to the bathroom, show him a picture of the bathroom or say “bathroom.”
- The bathroom must be fun- bring a favorite book or toy in there so he is comfortable there and excited to go.
- Don’t force him to sit on the toilet- let him go if he does not want to continue sitting, but attempt to bring him back at the next scheduled toileting time.
- If he is sitting on the toilet, never let him sit for longer than 7 minutes. If he is going to successfully urinate, it will happen by that time.
- Give him a drink 15 minutes before the scheduled toileting time.
- Reinforce him when he goes "Great job going to the bathroom"
- If your child has an accident, do not reprimand or embarrass him. Calmly reassure him and ask him if he wants to try again on the toilet. Bring him back to the toilet at the next scheduled time.
- BE POSITIVE! We want the child to feel proud when he successfully uses the bathroom.
