Don't forget to check your child's grade on HomeLogic. As the end of the quarter quickly approaches, it's important to stay up to date on how things are going in class. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding your student's grades at any time!
Thanks
In math this week, we will be working on scale drawings. First, we will look at how scale drawings impact our lives. Then we will learn to convert objects' measurements when shown on a smaller scale. Finally, we will be taking a cartoon from the Sunday paper and recreating the panels by drawing them to scale on larger graph paper. It is something that always looks easier than it is. There are some talented artists in our class, but I bet they've never drawn something this way before. It will take a lot of patience!
There is a great website available to help parents keep up with all the things surrounding kids today regarding the media. Television, text messaging, Facebook. video games-our students are spending more time with media and digital activities they they do in school. Here's what the website has to say about themselves:
Common Sense Media is dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology.
We exist because our nation's children spend more time with media and digital activities than they do with their families or in school, which profoundly impacts their social, emotional, and physical development . As a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization, we provide trustworthy information and tools, as well as an independent forum, so that families can have a choice and a voice about the media they consume.
Please check this website out and add it to your favorites list. It is a phenominal resource for parents and teachers!
For the 8th graders I work with, we have been having our meetings at Niles West High School. At these meetings, we have discussed the students' progress so far this year. After that, students are able to meet with the people who will be their counselors while they are students at Niles West. It's been informative for the families to get a head start on what life will be like as freshmen next year! While they don't know exactly what their schedules will look like, it's nice for them to see what classes they will be taking.
