Reading Strategies for Home

Choosing a Book
1. When you choose a book to read-aloud to your child it should be slightly above their independent reading level. This will help them become better independent readers.
2. If your child will be reading alone, help them choose an appropriate book using the attached guidelines.

Prior to Reading
1. Preview the Title, Pictures and Text.
2. Think about what you know or want to know after reading.
3. Go over any words that may be new to your child.
4. Make Predictions about what will happen in the story.
5. Decide how the story will be read.
CHOICES -Child reads silently or orally, parent reads, child and parent alternate reading (ECHO), child and parent read simultaneously(CHORAL)

During Reading
1. Self-Check and Re-read if necessary: Does it make sense?
2. Visualize: Make a movie in your head.
3. Make Connections: (Text/Self,Text/Text and Text/World)
4. Questioning: (Ask your child the 4 types of questions)
5. Model how to read with expression.
6. Use picture and context clues to figure out unknown words.
7. Predict/Infer: Continue to make predictions using clues in the text.

After Reading
1. Have your child re-tell the story to you. Listen for main events,
main characters, setting, main problem and ending.
2. Check your predictions.
3. Continue to discuss connections that you or your child made.
4. Allow your child to re-read the story as many times as desired.
